Shins can be conditioned, but not ankles. That's because it is a complex system of bones and ligaments designed for movement, not impact - which is why ankles are most commonly injured in training.
After years of dealing with ankle injuries, we've developed our Instep Guards for this exact purpose. They're padded on the instep to prevent injury when a kick lands on an elbow or a knee, but slim enough to fit under your shin pads without restricting movement.
Featuring an adjustable instep pad and silicone grip bands, our Instep Guards are designed to cover the ankle gap in shin pads while also providing compression and stability.

These fit well and will definitely protect your ankles during sparring.
I have two minor complaints.
One is that because the foam padding is so thick, it can be an awkward fit with some shin guards and cause them to slip off more frequently.
The second is that kicking pads or the heavy bag with these things on can actually sometimes hurt your toes because your instep will collide first, but your toes will keep going.
If the padding was less stiff and more gel-like like, I think that would be a big improvement.
Really comfortable and perfect fit to be used standalone or with leather shin guards for added protection. Will be buying more once it's in stock again. Can't wait for the scruffle duffle to come out as well !

The Scraphouse Instep Guards are incredible! Great extra ankle protection and very comfortable under the shin guards. I loved Muay Thai sparring with these new additions!
